Trunk Songs | Northern Sky Theater

Trunk Songs

Ever heard of a “trunk song”? HINT: It’s not a song about trees. 😉

When a song gets written for a musical, but then cut during the development process for one reason or another, that song goes into the author’s “trunk”—that’s why we call it a trunk song. A lot of these songs are really good! We’ve been looking for an excuse to showcase them, and this seemed like the perfect time.

Most of the songs in Trunk Songs are sung by the authors themselves. They come from shows as far back as 1994 cult classic Belgians in Heaven, and as recent as last year’s mega-hit Dad’s Season Tickets.

Trunk Songs is pure delight. As Jeff Herbst said after he watched the finished product, “The nostalgia is thicker than molasses, but the creativity of this as its own premiere puts it right smack into the Northern Sky canon as a true original.”
